Social Impact assessment

We help clients assess the social impacts of their projects, plans, programmes, and policies.  We have carried out Social Impact Assessment (SIA) to World Bank/IFS standards for governments, project developers or for funders  of major infrastructure and extractive sector projects through the whole project cycle from planning to decommissioning and closure.   We work closely with client teams, affected communities and wider stakeholders from scoping, through impact prediction to developing mitigation activities and long-term Social Management Plans.  Our experience embraces Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) with indigenous communities to developing Resettlement and Compensation Frameworks and plans, Community Investment Funds, and training schemes.  Our SIA work often incorporates Human Rights, Health and Cultural Impact Assessment.   Our recent SIA experience has been in East and West Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Between 2013-2020 we have helped Tullow Oil and local communities through the process of site assessment, extensive engagement with communities and government to agreeing access to community land which minimises impacts to livelihoods, cultural heritage and environment. We also helped prepare Land Access Frameworks and Resettlement and Livelihood Restoration Frameworks.

We worked closely with a major oil and gas company to identify and mitigate potential human rights impacts from its oil exploration and pipeline activities. The HR assessment focused on the key issues of access to land, water and the voluntary principles on security and human rights.

Mine Closure Plans

We worked closely with an international gold mining company and the Tanzanian government, local communities and NGOs to develop a closure plan which would reduce the huge social risks (health, safety and security) of illegal artisanal mining and encourage alternative livelihoods from sustainable farming, forestry and enterprise uses of the site.
